Scope and Tag Usage

The list below represents the animal tags that can be used to describe content within WILD. Tags appear in the browse column on the left-hand-side of the screen on the home page. Tags also appear in the detailed description of individual documents. Only tags that have been selected as relevant will appear in the browse list. For example, "penguin" appears in the list below, but until a document has been tagged with that term it will not appear in the browse menu. As such, the list below is far longer than what will appear in the browse menu.

NREL developed a fairly comprehensive list of animal tags to facilitate adding new content to WILD in a rapid manner. We include the list below to let WILD users know the potential direction the database is taking and to solicit feedback regarding the tags chosen.

Several categories include a general tag [e.g., Birds (general), Passerines (general)]. These tags are used to label documents that describe a general category of animal or that include many members of a given category. For example, documents that are tagged with "Passerines (general)" may either include information about a large number of Passerines or may not be specific about the types of Passerines being discussed. It seemed more reasonable in instances like these to create a "catch-all" category that still provides some level of specificity without having to guess the authors' intentions or tagging a single document with too many tags.
